What a powerful evening for our community! Last night was a true testament to what happens when neighbors come together to protect both human health and our local environment. In less than 48 hours, we rallied over 200 signatures and brought more than 20 passionate supporters to the PVPUSD Board Meeting. Six of us stood up to speak out against swapping natural grass for a toxic plastic artificial turf surface at Palos Verdes Intermediate School (PVIS).
While the decision to install artificial turf isn't final yet, our collective effort forced the School Board to debate the issue for over 30 minutes. The board specifically acknowledged that a 200-signature petition shows the community deserves to be heard. Even though the board ultimately voted 4-1 to proceed with the bid process, several members openly raised safety concerns. Board member Sara Dean voted "no" and courageously urged a broader policy review on whether artificial turf belongs on any PVPUSD K-8 campus.
So, where do we go from here? As the district waits for project bids to come in, we can't afford to sit back and watch the tide go out. This is our moment to build even greater momentum for safer, natural alternatives. Will you join us in taking action? We urge every parent, student, and neighbor to write to the school board today. Tell them it’s time to consider a district-wide ban on artificial turf across all K-8 campuses—not just at PVIS.
At the Cove Collective, we believe protecting our local coastline starts right in our own backyard. With so many of our schools sitting less than a mile from the shoreline, keeping our waters clean is a responsibility we all share. We want our kids to grow up as true clean ocean stewards—at school, on the beach, and in their own neighborhoods. The PVIS turf project is a critical reminder of how upstream decisions impact our marine ecosystem, and we’re committed to leading the charge. Let’s keep pushing forward together!
